What is a Certificate III in Aged Care?

A Cert III in aged care is a formal qualification you can achieve by undertaking a course in Australia. It’s often used as a starting point for those who want to try out being a support worker or aged care worker, but who may not know where they want to specialise yet, or who have little experience in the industry of community care. A Cert III in aged care may teach you:

  • How to provide both in-home care and care service based out of an aged care facility
  • About the aged care industry and provide work placement opportunities
  • When and how disability services may overlap with personal support needs for the elderly
  • How to support independence in the elderly
  • Safe work practices for a community support worker, aged care worker or personal care provider
  • The difference between a home care assistant and a nursing assistant
  • How to work with a range of diverse people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  •  First aid qualifications

Why should I study a Certificate III in Aged Care?

Working in aged care can be incredibly rewarding, but as such can also be uniquely challenging. As such, it’s crucial that you’ve completed training prior to becoming a residential care worker or aged care assistant.

A Certificate III is the perfect way to dip your toe in – start some study and experience work placement and providing direct client care, with the option of further study down the road. Studying a Certificate III will give you the perfect base to become a personal care worker.

Studying Aged Care can lead to a lifelong, full-time career with heaps of career outcomes, including moving into health care, working your way up in the aged care sector to serve on boards and owning your own individual support (ageing, home and community) agency.
